Stop Negative Thinking

Stop Negative Thinking

Have you ever let one small annoyance bother you for hours? Dwelling on the negative can be tempting, but it leads to a lot of pain. Often, when this happens, you over react in other areas of your life and then the negativity snowballs. This is a negative pattern of behavior.

When something upsets you, it is up to you how you react. You can either let it go, or you can spend hours feeling down.

How can you let things quickly go? By changing your thought patterns.

Turn your inner voice around. Stop using it for negativity and start using it to make yourself happier. The next time negative thinking creeps up, try saying:

1. "Stop" 2. "Next" 3. "Enough" 4. "Shhh"

Recognise when you are upset and consciously decide to handle your feelings in a positive, constructive way. To do this, take a deep breath, place your hand over your heart and think of a happy memory or an inspiring quote.

To stop negative thinking, some of my favorite inspiring quotes from my personal development plan are:

1. "I am thankful for all I have" 2. "My life is a gift" 3. "I am surrounded by love and joy" 4. "Obstacles are just an opportunity for me to grow and learn about myself" 5. "This too shall pass"

As you slowly exhale, turn the good feeling into an energizing and uplifting color, and allow the color to flow through your body. I like to choose the color of sunshine and imagine it running from my chest into my arms and down into my legs and feet. The result is total happiness...sometimes, even my toes tingle a little bit :-)

Now, if something upsets me, I can place my hand over my heart and recall that good feeling instantly. The more often I make myself do this, the more often I feel good. The happiness snowball grows larger and larger and my automatic negative thoughts become more and more faint and distant.

Negative thinking is an unhealthy choice. And, that is all it is: a choice. You are not born as person who dwells on the down side of things - it is simply a habit that you picked up somewhere along the way of living your life. And, as such, you can change it.

After Years of Misery from Anxiety and Depression, I Gained My Life Back

Exhausted? Stressed-out? Overwhelmed?

Hi,

Courtney here, author of this site. When I developed anxiety and depression, I went to a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a physician, and to be truthful, in my experience, these people couldn't really help.Therapy sessions, yoga and getting more exercise lessened my anxiety symptoms, but did not stop them for good.

In fact, I later learned that because I was living in a constant state of low-level stress and anxiety, the chemicals in my brain had changed, making me more anxious and depressed. Clearly, merely managing my symptoms was not enough - in fact, following "the doctor's orders" made things worse....
