Self Motivation Tips

Self motivation tips exist because we all know what needs to be done in order to succeed, but actually doing it is an entirely different thing. Over coming self sabotage by putting down the Stoneyfield Farms organic frozen yogurt and actually getting up to get things done is always tough for me :)

If either case of not starting or not completing tasks continues on for too long, then it can affect self image and overall self confidence. This is because what was passing or temporary has become the status quo and feels very permanent and real. You can begin to wonder if you have a deep rooted problem and are the victim of self sabotage. You want things to change, but no matter how many self motivation tips you try, you just don't seem able to make any changes happen.

There are two different self motivation tips that can bring real and lasting change into your life: (1) thought training, and (2) behavioral conditioning.

Thought training is a self motivation technique that replaces negative thoughts with positive thoughts. It is the process of recognizing unhelpful thoughts that don't inspire action and then replacing them with new, motivating thoughts.

The two keys for me are stopping old thoughts and starting new ones. I find that often self motivation tips focus just on creating new, positive affirmations, which is only half of the equation.

I believe it is equally important to recognize that the old thoughts can be stopped and replaced. When you recognize that your thoughts are focused on self sabotage, simply say "stop" or "next thought" or, my personal favorite "I don't put my attention on that anymore".

Removing demotivating thoughts, instead of trying to add motivating new thoughts is an important part of thought training. This self motivation technique is a skill that brings with it the knowledge that our thoughts are not who we are and that we can leverage thoughts to move our lives in better directions. This is a life gift that I want everyone to experience and know.

Implementing positive thinking is a familiar self motivation tip to a lot of you. The basic premise is that if you think the right thoughts then you will take the right actions that will lead to the results that you want. Examples of positive, motivating speaking positively about your life circumstances, visualizing a positive outcome in the future, or reminding yourself that your current situation is temporary ("this too shall pass").

Behavioral conditioning is based on the belief that your actions will dictate your success, no matter what you are thinking. Habit formation is the cornerstone of this self motivation technique. As you perform certain behaviors over and over again, they become habits that lead you towards your end result. A good example of this for me is exercising. I often don't want to do it, but I do want to be in better health. I often have to begin jogging when I don't want to in order to get to the end result of being more physically fit. Behavioral conditioning is great to use when changing only my actions, and not also my thoughts, will get me to my goal. Behavioral conditioning is great when actions alone are effective enough for success.

Sometimes, thought training and behavioral conditioning intermingle. This happens when taking action will lead to more motivating thoughts. For example, there are days when I am feeling lazy and just want to sit around. However, if I take action to clean my house or run errands, even though I am not motivated to do so, I find that my motivation to do more actually increases. Having productive days can actually feel really good and rewarding, making me want to do even more. Then, the question becomes, "what else do I want to do and experience today?"
