Lack of Motivation: How to Conquer Limiting Beliefs

There are beliefs that you have about our world, like "The Universe is a friendly place." There are some beliefs that keep you safe and protected, like believing that if you smoke, you might get cancer. And then there are beliefs that are limiting and they damage you.

Damaging beliefs rob you of hope, passion, and they instill a lack of motivation. When a damaging belief is gripping you, it is as though you are living in a dark cave and you can't find the light. Such beliefs convince you that you are helpless and that you lack the power to walk out into the light; you are overcome with a lack of motivation.

The truth, however, is that you already have all the power you need inside of you for overcoming self doubt. When you finally decide that you will no longer allow yourself to live in darkness and powerlessness, then you have flipped on the light switch to your soul.

We lie to ourselves and say:

"I can't do it."

"I am helpless."

"There is nothing I can do."

"I don't know how to do it, therefore I am not capable of doing it."

"It is too scary."

"I might get hurt."

"If I fail, that would be very embarrassing. So, it is safer not to try at all."

"There is something wrong with me. I am a defective person. Therefore, I can't do it."

These beliefs limit your potential by keeping you out of the game of life. It can be easier to think that you are helpless to overcoming self doubt rather than to think that you are capable of conquering doubt. When you lack motivation, you are safe. The cave may be dark, but you have learned to feel your way around the rough walls, and what is familiar is comfortable. Facing fear is scary.

When you believe that others are holding you back or that the situation is preventing you from achieving success, then you are allowing other people and other things to have power over your life. What you are really telling yourself is that you don't have the power to create the life of your dreams. And that is very damaging to your soul.

Perhaps you are waiting for someone else to help you. It can seem easier to wait for assistance from someone more capable, more knowledgeable, and more powerful.

You might think, "If I wait in this cave long enough, then someone is bound to come and help me out." This is like saying, "If I am helpless enough, and sit here in the dark long enough, then someone will rescue me."

The more helpless you are, then the more likely it is that someone will come and help you. What does a helpless person in a cave do? They sit motionless, in the darkness, in fear and close thier eyes and just...shut down.

At some point, the cave dweller becomes aware of his thoughts and realizes that waiting for someone else to come and help means that he is still sitting in a dark cave. Being actionless means living in a cave, however, being aware leads to action. At some point, awareness will set in and over-power the lack of motivation:

"Is it really true that I can't get out of this cave? Why was I telling myself that I was helpless and needed to wait for someone else's assitance? With the touch of my hands, I know every inch of these walls. This is just a CAVE...why don't I find my way out?"

The dweller realizes what he is doing to himself and this spark of awareness is empowering. Awareness is the key to overcoming self doubt. In the light of awareness, suddenly, the cave seems smaller and less scary. You may wonder how you were ever afraid of the cave to begin with. Your lack of motivation will diminish and you will want to take action. You stop lying to yourself that you were stuck in the darkness. You will realize that you can conquer the darkness and find your way out of the cave.
