Building Self Confidence #5

Article #5 on Building Self Confidence:

There are two schools of thought on how much success a person can have in life. One, is that the ability to achieve success is an innate attribute, predetermined, and unalterable. On the other hand, the second school of thought is that success can be learned. Under this school of thought, the greater your ability to learn effective ways of being successful, then the more success you will experience in your life.

According to Websters.com, self-confidence is, "faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way....(had perfect confidence in herself)"

A low consciousness mindset is to approach life with the attitude that success is beyond your control; either you have the innate ability to achieve results, or you don't. Viewing success as "hit or miss" limits emotional growth and it is counterproductive to building self confidence. With this line of thought, if you don't succeed at something, then you aren't ever capable of succeeding in that area. For example, if you want to learn Math, but you have to study mathematic equations and formulas for long periods of time, then you might conclude that you aren't good at Math.

A high consciousness mindset is to approach life with the attitude that success is a learned skill. This allows ample room for building self confidence and tremendous emotional growth. Under this line of thinking, if you apply yourself you might still struggle with Math. But, if you take it a step further and develop effective ways to make Math easier for you, then you will be a success at Math. The emphasis is on learning how to make succeeding easier for you in any area of your life. Under this line of thought, building self confidence becomes quite easy and natural.

So, how have you been going about being successful so far? Is it working for you? Or, would you like to experience more prosperity and abundance in your life?

1. Have you tried to be successful, but things haven't worked out? Have you moved, changed jobs, or ended bad relationships just to now feel that you are no better off? If you are feeling stuck, out of options, or completely unmotivated, then just remember that you are reading this blog for a reason: to improve your life. So, if you are reading this, then you do have the energy and motivation to try again...it just might take a little longer for you to get over your lack of motivation. Building self confidence will become easier with a little time, so just be patient and kind to yourself.

2. If your strategy isn't working, then maybe it is time to try a new strategy! This is closely related to the first point above. If you have been trying to achieve success and "cross the finish line", but you feel as though you are just running in place, then it is time to try out a new strategy. For example, if you are applying for new jobs by responding to newspaper ads and getting nowhere, then it is time to look for other ways to find a new job. Go online and register with some of the job search engines, reach out to headhunters and recruiters, start networking at a local association or online group in your industry, and let your friends and family know that you are looking for new employment.

Some people might already know that their current strategy isn't working, but they don't know what else to do. You may feel that doing something, is better than doing nothing, even if it isn't a very good way to achieve your dreams. Sometimes, it can be easier to do the wrong thing rather than to stop, because at least you are doing something and you feel productive. But, by continuing to do the wrong things, you are not allowing time to come up with a new and different way to succeed.

3. Prioritize what you really want to succeed at. Take some quiet time to sit and really think about this answer. If you don't know where to start or how to choose, ask yourself what would make logical sense to achieve first, before all others. For example, if you want a higher paying job, and you want to save more for retirement, and you want to send your kids to summer camp, it would make logical sense to focus on obtaining a higher paying job since the money can be used to pay for your other desires.

If it doesn't matter in which order you achieve your goals, then go after the one that you are most passionate about and appeals to you. Don't worry about what other people might think and, even if the dream seems impossible, allow your inner voice guide you:

If you achieved it, would you feel good? Great? Elated? Where do you feel it in your body? Is your body tired? Or, is your body energized? Do you have excited tingles in your stomach or chest?

If your inner voice says, "Ah-ha! That would be thrilling!", then go after that thrill. When you are passionate, building self confidence and getting over a lack of motivation is easy. So, choose just one thing to focus on at a time and dedicate your time to building the necessary self confidence needed to head out into the world and achieve it.
